Teddy Afro Posts His First Album, Abugida, as One Nonstop Video on YouTube

Teddy Afro has posted Abugida, his first album, as one nonstop video on his official YouTube channel. The 56 minute official visualizer went up on Wednesday, October 28, and plays all 11 songs in order, the music site Ethio.Music reported.

Abugida first came out in 2001, so the album is now 25 years old. It was the first album by Tewodros Kassahun, the singer known as Teddy Afro, who was born in Addis Ababa in 1976.

A visualizer is a music video that plays the songs over artwork instead of filmed scenes. The image YouTube shows for this one is the album cover, with a smiling young Teddy Afro leaning on a tree. Next to it are the 11 song titles in Amharic.

Eleven Songs, One Video

The video description gives a start time for each song, so listeners can go straight to any track. The album opens with Hewan Endewaza, followed by Haile Haile, Baygermesh, Girmawineto and the title song, Abugida. The second half has Leman Lemash, Birabiro, Ayine Hulgize, Lela Alawekem and Lijinet Alat, and the album closes with Monaliza.

By Saturday morning, the video had more than 61,000 views. Its description says all rights are reserved to Teddy Afro. It names no songwriters, producers or video makers, Ethio.Music noted.

Songs for a Runner and an Emperor

Abugida gave Teddy Afro several hit singles, the American magazine Sojourners wrote in 2012. One of them, Haile Haile, honored the Olympic runner Haile Gebrselassie. Another was his tribute to Emperor Haile Selassie I.

A new edition of the album is also on Apple Music, with 11 songs and a running time of 55 minutes. Apple Music gives its release date as June 1, 2001, and files it under reggae. There, the song for the runner is called Gebreselassie instead of Haile Haile, Ethio.Music pointed out. Citing Wikipedia, the site says the album first came out on Nahom Records and Massinko Entertainment.

Old and New Albums Side by Side

The full video follows other uploads on the channel. On September 23, it posted a separate visualizer for each of the 11 songs on Abugida, Ethio.Music said. In August, it posted two nonstop videos of Etorika, the album Teddy Afro released this year.

His later albums include Tikur Sew in 2012 and Ethiopia in 2017. According to Wikipedia, Ethiopia reached the top of the Billboard World Albums chart in May 2017. Etorika came out on April 16, 2026, with 18 songs, as his first studio album since Ethiopia.

Songs from Etorika still draw large audiences on YouTube. Ethio.Music ranks Amharic songs each month by the YouTube views they gain. Its October chart counted views from October 19 to 26. Teddy Afro had six of the ten places, all with songs from Etorika.

Shih Bibal (Back to 90s) was second, with 616,120 new views in that week. Only Bironica, by Veronica Adane and the Tanzanian singer Rayvanny, gained more.
