He then slowed sharply and finished in 2 hours 45 minutes 26 seconds. Andreas Almgren of Sweden won the men’s race in 2:06:01 in his first marathon, and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya won the women’s race in 2:24:36.

Official results from New York Road Runners (NYRR), which organizes the race, list Deresa 474th among the men. Haftu Strintzos, an Australian who was born in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, finished fifth.

With the Leaders Until Mile 23

Deresa came to New York as the second fastest man in the field, with a best time of 2:02:38. It was his first race in the city.

He spent much of the race near the front. The Sports Examiner reported that Deresa and the American Conner Mantz were in front at 17 miles. NYRR split times show that he passed 35 kilometers in 1:45:34, the same time as Almgren.

At 23 miles, Deresa was one second behind the Swede. At 24 miles, the gap was 16 seconds. Almgren reached 40 kilometers in 2:00:00, while Deresa reached it in 2:07:43.

The last part of the race was the hardest for him. From the 25 mile mark to the finish, a distance of about 1.2 miles, he needed almost 37 minutes. Race reports published by Monday morning did not give a reason.

A Swedish Winner in His First Marathon

Almgren, the world half marathon champion, stayed in the lead group until Central Park. He pulled away from Yemaneberhan Crippa of Italy in the last mile, and Crippa finished second in 2:06:14.

NYRR said Almgren is the first Swede to win any division of the race. He is also the first man to win it in his marathon debut since Gebregziabher Gebremariam of Ethiopia in 2010.

Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho took third in 2:06:26 on his 21st birthday. He passed Benson Kipruto of Kenya, last year’s winner, just before the line.

Strintzos ran 2:06:34. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that he missed his national record by 14 seconds. It added that the result is very likely to secure his place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The leading women run past East 92nd Street in Manhattan during the 2024 New York City Marathon; Sheila Chepkirui, who won that year, is on the right side of the pack (Nrbelex / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0) [file photo]

Chepkirui Wins Her Second Title

In the women’s race, Chepkirui pulled away from her fellow Kenyan Hellen Obiri, the defending champion, in the final 150 meters. It was her second New York title in three years, after her win in 2024.

American Jessica McClain passed Obiri in the last strides to take second in 2:24:42. Obiri finished third, one second behind her. NYRR said it was the first time an American woman reached the podium since Shalane Flanagan in 2018.

No Ethiopian woman ran in the professional race. Gotytom Gebreslase, the only Ethiopian woman named in the field, withdrew before the race, Running News Daily reported last week.

Ethiopian runners have done better at other races this autumn. Hawi Feysa defended her title at the Chicago Marathon in October.
