Ethiopia cares about football. Loudly. The shirts, the arguments, the phones held up to a small TV in the corner. Ethiopia landed 10th overall. The fan side of the scorecard is striking. The study put Ethiopia at about 38.07 million football fans, second only to Nigeria in the group surveyed. It also counted more than 20 million football-related searches in a single month.<\/p>\n Then you look at the other column. Ethiopia was credited with 114 professional players and 50 registered clubs. Nigeria, by comparison, had more than 1,700 professional players in the same snapshot. Kenya, another East African neighbour in the ranking, showed hundreds of pros. The gap between how many people follow the game and how many get paid to play it is one of the widest in the set.<\/p>\n That does not mean people are less devoted. It usually means the pathway from the neighbourhood pitch to a stable career is still short on clubs, coaching depth, and money that sticks around after the weekend buzz fades. Fans fill the caf\u00e9s. The professional ladder has fewer rungs.<\/p>\n There are signs the federation is trying to thicken that ladder from the bottom. At the Ethiopian Football Federation general assembly in mid-September, officials pointed to the “One Ball for One Trainee” youth project and said it is starting to show results. Ethiopia’s return to the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations after a long absence was cited as one example.<\/p>\n Federation president Isayas Jira Bosho said the initiative is expected to grow into a youth league across 21 cities, with an annual budget talked about in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n Bosho was also re-elected this week for another four-year term, running through 2030. Continuity alone will not fix the pipeline. But youth leagues that actually reach many cities matter more than another speech about potential.<\/p>\n Ethiopia already knows how to produce world-class athletes in distance running. Football is the sport that fills living rooms. The study is a reminder that passion is not the missing piece. Structure is. If even a slice of that caf\u00e9 energy turns into coaching hours, safer pitches, and clubs that can keep young players on a payroll, the numbers on the professional side might start to look less lonely.<\/p>\n For now, the story is simple enough to say out loud. Ethiopia is one of Africa’s loudest football audiences.
