Kiros Asfaha Posts a New Stage Video of Maat Were (ማዓት ወረ), His 2020 Hit

Eritrean singer Kiros Asfaha posted a new video of his Tigrinya song Maat Were (ማዓት ወረ) on his verified YouTube channel late on Wednesday, November 4. The song is not new. His official video for it, spelled Meat Were, first appeared on the same channel in April 2020.

The new upload went live at about 10:57 p.m. Eastern Time, according to YouTube. By Friday morning it had more than 50,000 views. The channel, named Kiros Asfaha, carries a verified badge and about 152,000 subscribers.

Ethio.Music, a music news site, reported the post on November 5. It called the upload the channel’s first new music video since an October remix video. It also noted that the video description is empty, so no songwriter, producer or release date appears with it.

A Stage Version With a Live Band

The 2026 video runs eight minutes 54 seconds. It shows Kiros on a stage in a light pink jacket, backed by a band with saxophone, bass guitar and drums. The players wear white vests. The video does not name the venue, the city or the date of the performance.

The thumbnail spells the singer’s name Kiros Asfeha and carries the words Produced by Kiros Asfeha. The video title writes the song name in Ge’ez script as ማዓት ወረ.

The 2020 Original and Its Credits

The first official video, titled Kiros Asfaha Meat Were (Official Video), was posted on April 8, 2020. It runs seven minutes 57 seconds and has more than 2.8 million views. Its description gives the credits that the new post leaves out.

It names Kiros as writer of both lyrics and melody. Tala Luji played keyboard and bass guitar, and the song was recorded at Megamix studio. Sebahtu filmed the video and Fishaye directed it. The description says all rights are reserved to Habesha Plus, and it lists Meat Were as the title of one of his official albums, next to Aleku, Nabra and Menbar Aydgemnyu.

What the Words Say

The 2020 description prints the full lyrics in Tigrinya. There the title is spelled መዓት ወረ, with a different first letter from the new post. The opening line, መዓት ወረ ብዛዕባይ, means roughly “so many rumors about me.” The chorus repeats a simple answer: ኣነ ከመይ ከም ዘለኹ ዝፈልጥ ኣነ ጥራይ’የ, or “only I know how I am.”

The song is a reply to gossip. The singer says people talk about his face but cannot see his inner life, his illness or his troubles. He asks them to leave him alone and stop spreading empty talk. These translations are Tewnet.com’s own and are not from the artist.

Tigrinya is spoken in Eritrea and in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. Like Amharic it is written in Ge’ez script, and many words in this song will look familiar to Amharic readers. Tewnet.com has covered other Eritrean music before, including the band Heaven’s song Koinelka’do.

The new stage video follows a pattern this year of artists bringing older songs to their own channels, as Teddy Afro did with his 2002 album Lebo. Kiros has not said whether more stage videos will follow.
